A babymoon? What's that?
A babymoon is a play on words on 'honeymoon', and is a kind of last holiday for two before the baby arrives. A moment to enjoy together, relax and prepare (to live towards the moment) for the expansion of the family. Away from the daily hustle and bustle and just focus on each other! But where do you go? Well, Curaçao is a perfect choice. Let us explain why!

1. Sun, sea and a breeze
A babymoon is all about rest and relaxation, and Curaçao is the perfect place for that. The island has pleasant temperatures all year round, a gentle breeze and sun-drenched beaches. Perfect for getting away from the hustle and bustle at home.
Tips for being in the sun when you are pregnant:
Avoid the strongest hours of sunshine between 11am and 3pm.
Wear a hat and light, airy clothing to avoid overheating.
Use a high factor sunscreen (at least SPF 30 or higher). And reapply regularly! (or have your partner do it ;) )
Drink enough water to prevent dehydration.
Seek shade regularly and listen carefully to your body.
Choose a beach bed under a parasol for extra protection.
2. Easily accessible destination
As a pregnant woman, you would rather avoid a long and complicated journey. Curaçao is about a 9-hour flight from the Netherlands, but the connection is excellent. There are several direct flights per day with KLM, TUI or Corendon.
From Canada you can fly direct (about a 6 hour flight) with Air Canada from Toronto or Montreal
From the United States there are daily flights with American airlines from Miami (approximately 2 hours), regular direct flights from Charlotte, North Carolina, occasional flights from Atlanta with Delta Airlines and daily flights from New York City (JFK) with JetBlue (about a 5.5 hour flight).
You can flexibly choose what is most comfortable for you! No endless transfers or unnecessary stress, just get in and a few films later you are at your tropical destination!
3. Reliable care and no scary diseases
Of course you don't assume that you need medical help, but it is still a nice idea that healthcare is well organized in Curaçao. The island has a good hospital and other medical facilities, many general practitioners and midwives, and everyone speaks English. That gives some extra peace of mind, if something happens!
Are you worried about tropical diseases? Don't panic. Zika has not been reported in Curaçao for years. Dengue fever does occur, but is mainly annoying if you get it, and not harmful to the little one in the womb (as might happen with Zika). The most important thing is to keep a close eye on symptoms such as high fever and, if necessary, combat that with paracetamol (not with NSAIDS such as Ibuprofen!). This applies to everyone, wether you are pregnant or not. Traveling always involves (some) risk. Do you still want to keep the risk of mosquito bites as small as possible? Then you can choose to avoid the rainier months (November - February).
3 tips to reduce the chance of mosquito bites:
At dusk and in the evening, when mosquitoes are most active, wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.
Use a mosquito repellent containing DEET (up to 30% and up to twice a day, which is safe during pregnancy according to guidelines).
If necessary, sleep under a mosquito net.
4. Pregnancy-proof activities
Swimming in crystal clear water, a relaxing pregnancy massage or a romantic sunset cruise? You don't have to lie on a beach bed all day. Curaçao offers plenty of options for light activities that are perfect when you're pregnant.
It is also fun to do an ultrasound during your babymoon! How unique is to do a gender reveal scan or a 3D ultrasound at your tropical destination. After the gender reveal scan you can do the reveal on the beach! (or another beautiful place).
Tip: At Mirasoon you can book such an ultrasound with a 10% discount if you use the code BABYMOON!

5. Delicious food
Eating and pregnancy go hand in hand. In Curacao you can enjoy delicious and fresh food. Tropical fruit, fresh fish (well cooked of course) and local specialties such as pastechi and stobá. There are plenty of restaurants with a nice, relaxed atmosphere where you can dine without getting overstimulated.
6. No stress, just enjoy
The most important thing during a babymoon: you don't want to have to do anything at all. No fuss, no stress. Curaçao breathes that relaxed atmosphere. The locals are friendly, the pace is nice and slow and no one looks surprised if you just want to sit down and enjoy the moment. Exactly what you need before the maternity period starts.
So, if you are looking for the perfect place to enjoy yourself together before you become parents, Curacao is definitely a must. Swimming pool, sea, a coconut in your hand and a partner who rubs your back. Sounds like a great plan, right?
