Placing an Implanon
An implanon is a small rod of about 4 cm long and 2 mm thick (matchstick size ).
This implant is placed under the skin of the upper arm for long-term contraception. It contains the hormone etonogestrel.
During placement, the skin is anesthetized, and a special tool is used to slide the rod just under the skin on the inside of the upper arm.
Installation usually only takes a few minutes.
After insertion, you will feel the rod as a thin rod under the skin.
The rod continuously releases a small amount of hormones. This suppresses ovulation, thickens the cervical mucus, and changes the uterine lining, making pregnancy virtually impossible.
It works for up to 3 years and you can come to us to have the Implanon removed if desired.
The Implanon can be purchased at a pharmacy with a prescription from a general practitioner, midwife, or specialist. This is at your own expense.
