IUD placement

Contraception is also important if there is no (longer) pregnancy wish.

When is an IUD not a good choice

  • if you are or may be pregnant

  • if you have an STD (if in doubt, get tested).

  • if you have unexplained bleeding outside of your periods

  • if you have unexplained lower abdominal pain

  • if you know that your uterus has an abnormal shape or fibroids

  • if you have previously had an expulsion (prolapsed and/or lost coil)

  • if you have breast or cervical cancer, or any other hormone-dependent tumour
