The choice for a water birth is increasingly becoming more popular because of the significant benefits for mother and child. However, you should consider careful preparation and good compliance with hygiene regulations to ensure that the experience is as positive and safe as possible! In addition , its presence in water increases the production of oxytocin, a hormone that stimulates contractions , and at the same time reduces the level of stress hormones. This natural effect is further enhanced by an increase in endorphins, known as the body's 'natural painkillers'.


You don't need much space for a bath birth. This can be done in your living room, bedroom or kitchen. There is also often a lot of room for the partner to provide support.

During a water birth, it is crucial that every element that comes into contact with the water meets the highest hygiene standards. It is standard practice for example to use a new plastic liner every time a birth pool gets used, and as previously mentioned, the use of a new, unused 'non-toxic' hose for filling the birthing pool is essential. These hoses must be free of harmful substances and suitable for contact with drinking water. For an extra layer of safety, 'food-grade' PVC hoses can be used, although these are more expensive to purchase.


Avoid a normal bath or jacuzzi

When choosing a suitable location for the water birth, one should avoid the option of a standard bath or jacuzzi. These not only do not provide sufficient space and hygiene , but can also pose other risks, such as infections due to the jets and ports that are difficult to clean.


The risk of gulping water is negated

It is important to understand that babies, who develop in amniotic fluid, have an instinctive reflex that prevents them from breathing until exposed to air. This ensures that they will not gasp for water when born underwater.
